BLACK MAN'S LAW DICTIONARY QUIZ

In my never-ending quest to provide fun educational tools to the public (and sell a few books in the process), I'm starting a new contest -- The Black Man's Law Dictionary Quiz.  All law students are familiar with Black's Law Dictionary.  It's a HUGE book filled with incomprehensible Latin words and even more incomprehensible definitions.

For instance, here is the definition of the term "abishering":

Quit of amercements.  It originally signified a forfeiture or amercement, and is more properly called mishering, mishersing or miskering, according to certain writers.  It has since been termed a liberty of freedom, because, wherever this word is used in a grant, the persons to whom the grants is made have the forfeitures and amercements of all others, and are themselves free from the control of any within their fee.

Perhaps it's just me but this definition is not very helpful.  In fact, if it were any less helpful, it could work for the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Therefore, this quiz promises to not only test your knowledge but also provide you with answers that you can understand.

The contest will work as follows: Each week, I will post a new multiple-choice quiz testing your knowledge of various legal terms.  You will receive 100 points for each correct answer but you will lose 50 points for each wrong answer.  You also have the option of answering "I don't know," in which case you will neither gain nor lose points for that particular question.

The person who receives the most points each week will win a prize.  I haven't figured out yet what that prize is but it should be good.  The person with highest point total for all quizzes will receive an even better prize (assuming I can get a sponsor to pay for it or my readers buy enough books in the meantime -- hint hint).

And don't miss the opportunity to own your own copy of If It Does Not Fit, Must You Acquit? -- Your Humorous Guide to the Law.  Here is what people are saying about the book:

"Eddie Murphy meets Alan Dershowitz and the result is funny, insightful, and informative!”

"I find Sean Carter GUILTY... of hurting my sides at all the great jokes in his book!  This book is an easy-to-use and fun-to-use guide on the law.”

"Sean Carter managed just the right mix between black-letter law and humor, and he has a knack for coming up with good hypotheticals.  The book resurrected topics I forgot the minute I turned in my bar exam."

“The book is a great handy-dandy one volume guide to the law that covers almost everything in my courses this year ... it is worth every penny."

"This is a great gift for a lawyer or law student to give to their relatives to help them understand the basics of law, without feeling intimidated.  After all, you've got to love a book that explains the First Amendment as 'the freedom to pray, bitch and moan.'"
